The phone slipped from Chloe's numb fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor. The screen, displaying the devastating results, stared back at her with cruel indifference. Her biological parents. Names she’d never heard. A life she’d never lived.

A wave of nausea washed over her. She stumbled to the bathroom, her legs feeling like lead weights. The reflection in the mirror was a stranger, the face she'd always known now alien and unfamiliar. Tears streamed down her face, silently, endlessly.

She sank to the floor, wrapping her arms around herself, seeking a comfort that was no longer available. The world around her seemed to spin, threatening to pull her under.
