He drove past the house slowly, pretending to be searching for an address. His knuckles were white against the steering wheel. The silence in the car was deafening. He saw the "SOLD" sign and the red tape that was now wrapped around the property. He felt a sting behind his eyes.

He knew he should have been there, should have fought harder to save it. He'd procrastinated, made excuses, and now, it was too late. He berated himself for his inaction. His gut twisted with a sharp, familiar pain.

He pulled the car over, resting his forehead on the steering wheel. He felt a tremor run through him, an involuntary shaking that he could not control. He took a long, shaky breath, and drove on, without a backward glance.
