The news reporter's voice, chirpy and upbeat, sliced through the airwaves. A rival inventor had just been awarded a patent for a device almost identical to the automated plant watering system Eleanor had meticulously designed. Her fingers, usually nimble with a soldering iron, fumbled with the remote.

She snapped it off, the sudden silence a heavy weight. The vibrant greens and blues of her living room, usually a source of joy, now seemed to mock her. The expensive, plush sofa was far too soft to provide comfort. She retreated to her bedroom, pulling the curtains and plunging the room into darkness.
