The email notification was a dull thud in Maya’s inbox. Another inventor had patented a wearable device that could translate animal vocalizations into human language. All her work. She had been so sure. The realization hit her with a sudden jolt, like a punch to the chest.

She closed her laptop, the screen reflecting her own blank expression. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes. She wanted to yell but she couldn't. She grabbed her sketchpad and ripped out the pages, tearing them into tiny pieces.
