"Rover!" The sharp bark startled him. He looked out the window to see the shaggy mutt, Rover, chasing the squirrels across his freshly fertilized vegetable patch. John felt a hollowness in his stomach, a coldness that seemed to seep into his bones.

He'd spent all weekend prepping the soil, envisioning the bounty. The thought of starting again filled him with a weariness so profound it was almost paralyzing.
