The silence in the apartment felt thick, a physical weight pressing down on Maya. Liam had stormed off to his room after their argument, slamming the door hard enough to rattle the framed posters on the wall. She wandered into the kitchen, the bright yellow of the walls seeming to mock her glumness. She ran a hand over the smooth countertop, then opened the refrigerator door, gazing at the uneaten leftovers. Hunger had abandoned her.

He didn't understand. She sighed, her shoulders slumping. This was the second time this week they'd fought. He was always so dismissive of her desires, always prioritizing his own comfort. She knew he'd cave eventually; he always did. But the knowledge felt hollow, devoid of the joy it usually brought.

She pushed away from the fridge, the sudden movement causing a dizzying sensation. She needed air. Grabbing her keys, she walked out into the crisp evening, the cool air doing nothing to soothe the tightness in her chest.
