She had poured her heart out, describing how a cat would add joy to their home. Her roommate, Chloe, had simply shrugged, dismissing the idea with a wave of her hand.

Now, Amelia stood frozen in the hallway, the argument's aftertaste coating her tongue. She reached out and touched the wall, her fingers tracing the imperfections in the paint. The emptiness in the apartment felt particularly acute.
