He had been going through his great-grandfather’s belongings when he came across the photos. His family had always painted a picture of a close, loving relationship between his great-grandparents. His grandfather had always told tales of his mother, filled with love and warmth.

The photos showed his great-grandmother, smiling, laughing, with another man. There were so many of them, from so many years. She looked happy, alive, and free.

He pushed away from the table, his chair scraping loudly on the floor. His head was pounding. The room felt stifling. He felt as if the very ground beneath his feet had shifted, leaving him adrift in a sea of unknown truths.
