He stared at the program, the glossy paper practically mocking him. "A Tribute to David's Dedication." The words seemed to jump off the page, taunting him. The party felt like an elaborate charade. He imagined his father, always so focused on his career, never really *seeing* him.

His palms were clammy as he approached the podium. The laughter and chatter of the crowd faded to a dull roar. He cleared his throat, but the sound felt thin, inadequate. He spoke about his father's achievements, his successes, but his words felt hollow, like empty promises.

He noticed his sister watching him from across the room, a look of sympathy on her face that only added to the internal strain. He cut the speech short, unable to continue. The world seemed to tilt on its axis as he retreated, the cheers of the crowd chasing him from the room.
