“How could they?” Alex said, his voice laced with disbelief. He slumped onto the worn sofa in the breakroom, the plastic cushions creaking beneath his weight. The announcement had ripped through the office like a firestorm.

He picked at a loose thread on the sofa, his gaze fixed on the frayed edges. The cafeteria was bustling with the sounds of hushed conversations and nervous laughter, but Alex felt utterly alone. The camaraderie, the shared history, the bonds he had forged over the years felt fragile, threatened.

He wanted to scream at the injustice, at the casual disregard for the lives and dreams of those who had made the company what it was. But all he could do was sit there, the thread in his fingers, and stare into the emptiness.
