Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the frantic rhythm of Amelia’s heart. She slumped onto the couch, the floral cushions offering little comfort. Her phone lay on the coffee table, the screen still displaying the offending text. *Thinking of you. Can’t wait to see you later.* Sent to… her best friend’s fiancé. He had, of course, responded with a casual, “Wrong number, I think?” She clenched her jaw, feeling a tightening in her chest.

A choked sob escaped her as she grabbed a throw pillow and buried her face in it. The silence of the apartment felt deafening. She hadn't realized how much she had been anticipating the evening. Now, the thought of seeing him, her *friend*, felt impossible.
