A wave of heat crashed over Emily as she read the letter. Everything around her swam into a watery haze. Her vision tunneled. She felt as though she was falling, plummeting into a vast, empty space. His office, previously a source of inspiration and guidance, suddenly seemed distant, unreachable.

She remembered the hours spent discussing her research, the shared laughter, the feeling of camaraderie. Now, all that seemed to be gone. The world seemed to have tilted on its axis, leaving her stranded and exposed. She clasped her hands together to stop them from shaking.
