Rain lashed against the attic window as Arthur sifted through the boxes. Years of meticulously collected stamps, each a tiny window onto a world he’d cherished. His daughter, Clara, had always shown a polite interest, a fleeting glance at his albums. Now, she was the one locked up here, pouring over his treasures, ignoring him completely.

He clenched his jaw, the muscles tight. He hadn’t been invited. He’d simply found the door to the attic closed, the key gone from its hook. He’d climbed the stairs slowly, a lead weight settling in his stomach.

"Clara, darling, I just wanted to see what you were up to," he'd said, his voice unusually thin. She had barely glanced up, her brow furrowed with intense concentration. "Just admiring the collection, Dad. You know how much I love history now." He retreated, his shoulders slumped. The silence of the house seemed to amplify the drumming of the rain and the echo of his own solitude.
