Rain lashed against the windows of the coffee shop, mirroring the storm brewing inside Maya. Liam’s words echoed, “San Diego, you know? Opportunity of a lifetime.” She stared at her lukewarm latte, the foam now a sad, deflated mess. Her fingers traced the rim of the cup, a nervous tic she hadn't realized she had. "When?" The word escaped, sounding small and frail. Liam, oblivious, was already detailing the perfect weather, the amazing job prospects. She excused herself, muttering something about needing air, and stumbled outside, the downpour doing little to soothe the tightness in her chest.
