"Seriously?" Olivia had choked out. Across the table, Chloe's smile faltered, her usual bubbly energy dimmed. Olivia felt a coldness creep into her extremities. They were supposed to conquer New York City *together*. Now, Chloe, eyes shining with excitement about a job in Portland, was leaving her behind. The waiter placed their food in front of them, but Olivia couldn’t bring herself to touch hers. The meticulously planned brunch date, the gossip and laughter, suddenly felt staged, a performance. She pushed her plate away, her appetite vanishing, the vibrant colors of the restaurant seeming muted and gray.
