“You’re… moving?” David repeated, the question sounding disbelieving, even to his own ears. He’d known Alex was interviewing for a job in Seattle, but the reality of it, the *doing* of it, was somehow worse. He leaned back in his chair, the sudden hollowness in his chest making it hard to breathe. He stared at the cracked paint on the wall, something he’d never noticed before, suddenly acutely aware of the dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun. The familiar comfort of their shared space now felt tainted, fragile.
