The twisted metal and crushed concrete of the garage formed a grotesque monument to the storm’s fury. The neighbor’s, Mrs. Rodriguez’s, ancient elm had given way, taking with it a significant chunk of what was a perfectly good garage. Jessica stood there, paralyzed, the image of the carnage burned into her mind.

She had spent weeks meticulously organizing that garage. It held all the memories: old photo albums, her grandmother’s sewing machine, and tools. They were all gone, crushed under the weight of the tree.

Mrs. Rodriguez, face pale and drawn, kept repeating, "Oh, Jessica, I am so sorry!" But the words felt hollow, inadequate to the scale of the disaster. Jessica didn't reply. She felt detached, as if she were observing the scene from a distance. She was the one who was left to clean up the mess.

Her hands moved robotically as she began sifting through the debris, searching for anything salvageable. A wave of exhaustion washed over her. She sat on a overturned bucket and closed her eyes for a moment.
