The twisted branches and exposed roots of the fallen sycamore created a scene of utter devastation. The neighbor’s, Ms. Olsen’s, once-proud tree had become a tangled heap of debris. It had landed right on top of his precious greenhouse.

He'd spent years building that greenhouse, tending to his exotic orchids and rare herbs. It was his sanctuary, his place of refuge. Now, it was demolished. The very thought of the effort, the investment, the years of care, was agonizing. His hands started to shake.

Ms. Olsen, pale and trembling, tried to offer some words of comfort, but they were lost in the roar of the wind. He could barely hear her.

He felt a profound sense of emptiness, a hollow ache that spread through his entire being. He wanted to scream. Instead, he simply turned and walked away, disappearing into his home.
