"Mr. Thompson?" The delivery man's voice jolted him from his reverie. He fumbled for his glasses, his hands unsteady. He signed for the package, then stood for a moment, the weight of the parcel pressing down on him. Inside was a framed painting, and with it, a letter. It was from his estranged son, Mark, a name he hadn't spoken aloud in the last decade. A cold dread seeped into his bones.

He paced his study, agitated, his footsteps echoing in the silence. The familiar scent of old books and pipe tobacco couldn't calm him. He felt exposed, vulnerable. His hands were clasped behind his back, his shoulders slumped as he read the letter.

He sank into his worn leather armchair, the painting still wrapped in bubble wrap. The words felt like a betrayal, a reminder of the chasm between them. The air was thick with unspoken words.
