The letter, postmarked a distant town, arrived on a grey, drizzly day. Its sender, her childhood sweetheart, had disappeared from her life decades ago. His words were a ghostly echo, a reminder of what might have been. A chill ran down her spine.

She paced the length of her small kitchen, her hands clasped in front of her. She couldn’t bring herself to open it.
