He cleared his throat, trying to project an air of calm that he certainly didn’t feel. He remembered the things he had said. The things he had done. He felt an intense need to apologize, but knew he couldn't.

He had spent years trying to erase the memory of his childhood cruelty. Now, it was etched on the face of the woman across from him. He had made a mess.

The conversation began, slow and halting. He asked polite questions, his voice tight. Each response felt like a condemnation.
