The air in the lab suddenly felt too thin. David watched Sarah enthusiastically demonstrating her new software. He felt his chest tighten, like a fist was slowly squeezing his heart. The identical code, the same innovative approach to the problem he’d poured his soul into, was displayed on the screen.

He abruptly stood, muttering something about needing fresh air. His legs felt shaky as he walked outside. The late afternoon sun offered little warmth. He leaned against the brick wall, a deep ache resonating in his shoulders and a throbbing pulse in his temples.
