"Fifty thousand dollars," Sarah whispered, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. She slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the otherwise silent apartment. The screen displayed the damning evidence – a savings account, untouched and unknown. She felt a profound emptiness, a yawning chasm where trust had once resided.

She wandered into the bedroom, her footsteps heavy on the hardwood floor. His side of the bed, usually inviting, now seemed like a foreign territory. The scent of his aftershave, which she usually found comforting, now made her throat close up. She sank onto the mattress, the springs groaning beneath her weight, a low moan escaping her lips.
