"How could you?" Leo mumbled into the phone, his voice barely a breath. Across the line, his wife, Emily, was trying to explain. But the words were meaningless, the justifications hollow. He sat at the kitchen table, the bank statement a paper weight.

His hands ran through his hair. He could feel heat rising in his neck, the skin prickling. She had lied to him. Hidden things from him. He couldn’t look at the picture on the counter of them together. He grabbed his coat and keys, needing to escape the confines of their shared space.
