Gemotions

The attic air hung thick with dust and the ghosts of forgotten things. Maya ran a hand over the rough wood of the time capsule, its metal surface cold against her skin. She'd been clearing out her childhood home, a task she'd dreaded since her parents passed. This was a mystery though. She'd no recollection of burying it. Inside, nestled amongst the faded mementos, was a tarnished silver locket.

It clicked open, revealing a miniature picture of her and her best friend, Sarah, arms linked. Maya's breath hitched. Sarah, who hadn't spoken to her in years. A letter, scrawled in their childish hand, spoke of unbreakable bonds and shared dreams. The final sentence, “Please don’t forget us,” stung like a sudden slap. Maya dropped the locket, the clatter a sharp, unwelcome sound in the silent room. She found herself clutching her chest.
