David hated the way the woman’s voice bubbled with enthusiasm. "It'll be a great project for the kids!" she said, gesturing toward his pristine lawn with a bright smile. He found himself stiffening. He’d carefully cultivated that lawn for years, the perfect green a point of pride.

He looked at the cheerful faces, the expectant eyes. He felt a prickly sensation crawl up his spine. He wasn't equipped for this kind of interaction.

"I'm sorry, no," he said, his voice curt. He turned and retreated back into his house, slamming the door. The loud click echoed through the silent rooms, a barrier against the sudden intrusion.
