The phone call. A woman on the other end, explaining she’d spent years researching his life, that his biography was due to be published. *The Architect of Silence: The Life of Silas Crane.* He found himself unable to speak, the receiver a dead weight in his hand.

He dropped the phone, the clatter echoing in the sudden silence. He went to his window, staring out at the world as though it were a foreign planet. The street below seemed to spin.

He felt a deep hollowness inside, a hollowness that threatened to consume him. He sank to the floor, curling into a fetal position, as if trying to disappear completely.
