The email shimmered on the screen, the words a blurry, cruel joke. “We regret to inform you…” The air in her small apartment seemed to thicken, pressing in on her chest. Her breath hitched, a series of short, shallow gasps. She swiped at her eyes, the screen suddenly a waterfall of distorted letters. “No, no, no,” she muttered, the sound barely audible, her voice cracking. Her fingers, suddenly clumsy and numb, fumbled for her phone. She needed to call someone, *anyone*, to make this nightmare vanish.
