Her hands flew to her face, covering her mouth as if to contain the scream threatening to erupt. The information hit her like a physical blow, stealing her breath, knocking the wind from her sails. A fence? Right here?

She backed away from the letter, bumping into a chair. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, a tightness that made it difficult to breathe. The room spun around her.

She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to regain control, to will the panic away. She took a shuddering breath. It felt as though every muscle in her body was screaming.

She had to call someone. She fumbled for her phone, her fingers clumsy and useless. Her mind felt like a tangled mess. She pressed the wrong buttons, the wrong numbers.
