The manager’s words echoed in her head: "Transition period." Now, here she was. Showing her replacement, a perky blonde named Jessica, the ins and outs of her job. Her hands felt clumsy, her fingers fumbling with the keyboard. She could hardly meet Jessica’s gaze, afraid of what she would see in those bright, expectant eyes.

She found herself talking too fast, tripping over her words. The office phone rang, and she jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. Each ring sounded like a death knell. She couldn't focus; her mind was a whirlwind of panic. She envisioned the future, a vast, empty expanse without her job.
