"No, no, no," whispered Daniel, his voice barely audible above the ringing in his ears. The lab. Empty. The familiar clinking of beakers and the hum of machinery, now ghosts. Professor Ramirez, his rock, his guide, his everything…had vanished. Daniel ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. He needed to understand. He needed an explanation. He needed… something. He felt a pressure building in his chest, making it difficult to inhale. He felt like he was going to explode. He slammed his fist on the workbench, and the force of the blow made his arm ache.
