He paced the hospital room, his shadow stretching and contorting in the dim light. Dr. Eleanor Reed, his supervisor, the one who saw potential in him, the one who gave him a chance…had transferred. The news had arrived in a terse email. He felt a pressure building behind his eyes, a sensation like a balloon inflating inside his skull. He ran a hand through his hair, pulling at the roots.
