“Just breathe,” Leo muttered, though the words seemed to fail to register with him. He was sprawled on the couch, the remote control clutched in his sweaty hand, the TV ignored. The phone was a silent threat on the coffee table.

He'd always been the one to take the lead, the assertive one. Now, the roles were reversed. He was stuck, waiting, utterly helpless. He knew this would be hard, but not like this.

He sprung up, kicking over the end table, sending his water glass smashing on the floor. He swore under his breath, then slumped back onto the couch, his shoulders slumped. The knot in his stomach tightened.
