He leaned back in his chair, a disbelieving laugh escaping his lips, quickly followed by a strangled sob. The room swam, the edges of everything blurring. He stared at the documents, the words a jumbled mess of ink that refused to make sense. He felt as though the floor had vanished beneath him.

He slammed his fist on the desk, the sound echoing in the sudden quiet of the room. He felt a surge of pure, unadulterated rage. He wanted to break something, to destroy the evidence of this monumental error. His eyes burned with unshed tears.

He stood up so abruptly the chair fell backward with a loud crash. He felt a rising heat in his chest, a wave of panic that threatened to overwhelm him. He stumbled towards the door, his legs unsteady, his vision obscured by a sudden rush of tears.
