Gemotions

The balloons, deflated and drooping like sad, colorful ghosts, mocked Amelia from the corner of the living room. Her breath hitched, catching in her throat as she stared at the empty space where the "Happy Birthday, Amelia!" banner should have been. It was supposed to be a surprise, a party for her thirtieth, orchestrated by her best friend, Sarah. Now, Sarah stood before her, shoulders slumped, eyes brimming with apology. Amelia felt a cold, clammy sweat break out on her forehead.

"But... but you said everything was set!" Amelia’s voice cracked, a tiny sound lost in the vastness of the betrayal. She clawed at the air in front of her face as if to physically remove the words from Sarah's mouth. Each inhale felt shallow, insufficient. The world seemed to tilt.

Her gaze darted around the room, taking in the pristine, empty surfaces, the silent evidence of a party that would never be. The imagined laughter, the music, the warmth of friends—all gone, evaporated like morning mist. A sob, sharp and painful, ripped from her chest. Her hands trembled as she reached for Sarah, then abruptly pulled away, as if Sarah was contagious.
