“No, absolutely not,” Daniel sputtered, his face burning. He slammed his fist down on the table, scattering the salt shaker. He felt like his lungs had shrunk. He was breathing shallowly, his chest a tight drum.

He felt a burning sensation behind his eyes. He had to get out. He couldn't stay here, surrounded by the reality of the situation. He tried to stand, but his legs felt unsteady, as though they were made of jelly.

He lurched forward, knocking over his chair. He had to get to that place. He had to tell them. He had to do something. He stumbled out the door, the cold air doing nothing to soothe his inner turmoil.
