The email arrived, a digital dagger to the heart. It had been sent to both of them, a group message from "Sarah". John, reading the words, felt a coldness creep into his bones, a chilling awareness. He looked up, across the kitchen table, at Emily. She was staring at the laptop screen, her face a mask of disbelief.

John felt his chest tighten, like a fist was squeezing it. He thought she might break. His mind was in overdrive. The world around him twisted. The perfectly arranged apartment suddenly seemed alien, filled with echoes of shared moments that now rang hollow.

Emily's lower lip trembled. She began to say something, but her voice failed her. John’s throat constricted. He hated her, he hated everything. He didn't know anything anymore.
