He found the note inside a worn copy of *One Hundred Years of Solitude*, a book that had always held a strange fascination for him. The air was thin, the words on the page a blur. The words were a revelation, a secret about his own lineage.

He started to laugh, a harsh, brittle sound that echoed in the empty room. His hands flew to his mouth, trying to stifle the sound. He was unable to stop.

He grabbed his coat and ran out the door, desperate to escape the confines of his apartment. The streets were a blur of motion, the city lights a jumble of color.
