The box blocked the doorway. It was a physical obstacle to her escape. "To: Jasper Stone," the label read. She couldn’t even read the rest of the address; everything was a blur. She needed to get out.

She pushed the box aside with her foot, not even looking at it. She reached for her keys, fumbling, unable to find them. Her breath hitched, shallow and ragged. The world felt too loud.

She saw the reflection of her face in the entryway mirror. Her eyes were wide, her face pale. She pushed herself against the wall, trying to flatten into it. It was too late.
