The patent denial letter fluttered in Amelia's trembling hand, the crisp paper a mocking adversary. Her breath hitched, shallow and erratic. She reread the sentence, the words blurring, "…already covered by patent number…" her own design, her hours of labor, reduced to a footnote. Amelia slammed her fist on the workbench, scattering tools. The metal screamed against the wood, a futile protest mirroring her own.
