His breath hitched in his throat, a ragged sound. He felt like he was trapped underwater, struggling for air. The screen glowed, a mocking beacon in the dim room. His son’s hidden profile, a carefully constructed alternate identity. A cold wave crashed over him.

He slammed his fist on the desk. He hadn't been able to sleep. Every creak of the house seemed to amplify the sense of dread that had been building inside him. He felt as though something awful was about to happen.

He wanted to scream. He wanted to break something. Instead, he forced himself to sit, to focus. He had to understand what he was seeing. He had to know the truth. He rubbed his eyes, the pressure a small reprieve from the raging inside of him.
