The radio, the goddamn radio! It had always been her nemesis. She was home alone, cleaning. It was supposed to be a normal afternoon. Then came the opening notes. Her song. “Broken Promises.” The same melody, the same words. But different. Distorted.

She dropped the broom, her hands flying to her mouth. Her legs felt like jelly. She spun in a circle, trying to find a solid surface to grab onto. The sound felt like a physical force, pushing her, contorting her. It was a betrayal. It was an insult.

Her breathing was erratic, shallow. She lunged for the radio, fumbling with the volume dial, desperate to silence the sound. She managed to turn it off, and then, the silence was almost worse. She felt like she was underwater, drowning.
