“No, no, no,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her mother, the paragon of virtue, dressed in a flapper dress, laughing, with a cigarette dangling from her mouth. It was such a contradiction to everything she'd been told.

She started to shake, a tremor that began in her fingers and spread throughout her body. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic, irregular rhythm. It felt as though it would explode out of her.

She looked around the room, the familiar furniture now alien and mocking. The room began to spin. She felt a powerful urge to shatter everything around her.
