The office air suddenly felt too thick, too close. Emily started to hyperventilate. She ripped the top button of her blouse, the fabric straining against her chest. The news, delivered with a casual air during a brief meeting, had hit her like a punch. Professor Ramirez – leaving. It was unbelievable. Her mind raced, a runaway train derailing from the tracks. Thoughts tumbled over one another, jumbled and incoherent. She felt like she was trapped in a box, suffocating, with no escape. She clawed at her throat, gasping for air.
