The elevator ride felt like an eternity. John's fingers, usually steady, were now twitching. He kept adjusting his tie, pulling at the fabric as if he were being strangled. His heart pounded so fast it felt like it would explode.

He imagined the meeting, the probing questions, the evaluation of his performance. He felt a deep, profound sense of inadequacy. He could hear his voice cracking as he imagined himself answering.

When the doors finally opened, he found himself stumbling out, nearly falling onto the polished floor. He felt a sudden, desperate urge to run, to disappear. He clutched the railing and tried to take a deep breath.
