The blood drained from Emily’s face. She stared at the words, unable to comprehend the simple sentence that was tearing her life apart. The eviction notice lay on the kitchen counter, a stark, unwelcome guest.

Her chest felt tight, as if a vise was squeezing the life out of her. She ran a hand over her forehead, trying to clear the fog of panic that clouded her mind.

She felt a sudden urge to flee, to escape the confines of the apartment. She turned and began to pace the floor, her steps rapid and uneven.

"This is a mistake," she whispered to herself, as if repeating the words could somehow change reality. She desperately needed to sit down, but she was unable to find a comfortable position.
