Gemotions

The library was dim and quiet. Daniel felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead. The letter, his stepmother’s letter, lay open before him. The words echoed in his head, *I am leaving… effective immediately.* He felt his stomach twist into a knot.

He rose from the chair, pushing it backwards. He needed space. He circled the table, his arms crossed over his chest, as if warding off a blow. He knew his father and stepmother had a strained relationship, but he hadn't imagined this.

His breathing became shallow and rapid. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. He needed to go outside. He rushed from the library, not bothering to return the letter to the shelf, and out into the cool evening air.
