He felt his stomach twist, a sickening knot forming in the pit of him. The news replayed itself in his mind, over and over, each iteration twisting the knife deeper. Across the country. Miles and miles away. The idea seemed physically impossible, a glitch in the fabric of reality. He slammed his fist on the table, making the cheap laminate groan in protest.

He had to get out. He couldn’t stay here, trapped in this stifling apartment with the crushing weight of this knowledge. He grabbed his keys, his hands shaking so badly he could barely insert them into the ignition. The world seemed blurry, the familiar streets twisted into an unfamiliar landscape.

His knuckles were white against the steering wheel as he sped, heedless of traffic, to her place. He would talk her out of it, somehow. He would beg. He would do whatever it took to make her stay. The thought of losing her made him feel like he was coming apart at the seams.
