The phone rang, jarring Mr. Harrison from his reverie. He jumped, spilling coffee across his desk. It was from Emily Carter, who'd had to repeat his physics class twice. The woman on the phone, Emily's mother, explained that Emily had donated to a charity in his name. It had been her way of saying thank you.

He clutched the receiver so tightly his knuckles turned white. His vision blurred. He found it difficult to focus on what the woman was saying. It all seemed so unreal.

He hung up, then sat there for a long time, staring out the window, his mind racing. He felt a deep welling inside him.
