The letter lay on the table, accusing. Accusatory. “Please consider removing the pine…” Michael reread it, each word a blow. He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, like a physical manifestation of his dread.

He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. He felt dizzy, lightheaded. He grabbed his keys and slammed the door, the sound reverberating in the sudden quiet.

He had to do something. He had to stop this. His legs propelled him forward, towards his neighbor’s house, his pace quickening with each step. He didn’t know what he was going to say, just that he had to say *something*.
